Activity #3: Create Your Own Ads
Overview: Students will use Canva to put everything that they have learned together from the two previous activities. They will choose two advertising techniques (pathos, logos, or ethos) and two different brands that correspond with the techniques chosen to create two print ads. Canva is a useful Web 2.0 tool because it allows users to easily create professional and attractive visuals for anything that they need!
Below is a sample ad for Tully's Kennels partnering with the Humane Society and using the pathos advertising technique.
- Create a free Canva account by signing up with your school email address.
- Click "Create a design" and choose either Social Media or Poster as your design type. You will need to create one form of direct mail and one flyer. For these ads, use two of the three advertising techniques, one for each type of media (two total).
- Use one of the free layouts or start from scratch and begin designing your first ad.
- Clearly communicate (without saying it) your advertising technique (pathos, logos, or ethos) and brand you are advertising. Choose a theme or "national day" to include in your ad.
- Create your ad! Be sure to include the brand name, logo, what you are advertising, graphics, important dates, and promotions.
- Make sure your first ad has saved. Repeat steps 2-5 to create your second ad using a different advertising technique and brand.
- When finished, save your second ad. Share both of your ads with your instructor via email.
