Social Studies Part 1: Use of Primary Source Documents
Standard:
Introduction: Students will read the following article to learn about advertising new products in the nineteenth century.
Activity #1: Students will go to the following article and read about understanding advertisements in historical newspapers. This will help them understand the different types of ads and give them some background knowledge on advertising and the impact that it has.

Activity #2: Open a Google Doc. Save it as lastname_advertising. While reading the article, answer the following questions for each new product in your Google Doc.

-Who was the target market for the tobacco cards?
-What was on the cards?
-What are your thoughts on this form of advertising?
Beauty Products:
-Who was the target market of the Pond's products?
-What were the two products and what were the goals of the products?
-What are your thoughts on the Pond's print ad?
Mail Order:
-Who was the target market of these mail order products?
-What did Sears do to save money?
-What did the first catalogs only sell?
-What are your thoughts on this form of advertising?

Standard:
Students will use the following timeline to explore the history of advertising. They will then use Google Maps to locate and label the historic advertising locations. Each mark should include the following: date/year, label of event, important information, and point of location.
Use the following tutorial to help you.
-Where was the first newspaper ad published?
-Where was first successful daily newspaper published?
-Where was The Sun, the first successful penny newspaper published?
-Where did Bozell & Jacobs open in 1921?
-In 1930, Advertising Age was launched where?
-Choose 5 additional events on the timeline and mark their locations.
You may have to do additional research to find locations! An example is shown below.
