Advertising Video Library
This video gives a brief history of the evolution of advertising in 60 seconds. This will be a good intro to the advertising lesson plan and hook the learners attention into wanting to learn more.
This video describes persuasive techniques in advertising, specifically pathos (emotion), logos (logic), and ethos (credibility/character). It also provides real examples of each to help further explain. Students will use what is learned to analyze Super Bowl commercials.
2017 Super Bowl Commercials
Commercial #1: Kia Niro "Hero's Journey" Starring Melissa McCarthy. This year, Kia's tag line was "a smarter kind of crossover." This was a comical commercial featuring McCarthy as a determined environmentalist.
Commercial #2: Coca-Cola: "It's Beautiful" In light of the recent 2017 election, Coke decided to do a replay of their 2014 Super Bowl ad which celebrates multiculturalism through "America the Beautiful" being sung in multiple languages.
Commercial #3: Michelin: "I Need You" Michelin makes its Super Bowl debut with the hashtag #BeThereMoments. It was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, Paris, and China and tells several stories within of reuniting friends and families in times of need. It let's you know that Michelin tires will get you there safely.
Commercial #4: Bai: Starring Justin Timberlake & Christopher Walken. The duo joins together by speaking N'Sync lyrics in order to inform the audience how to pronounce this healthy drink full of antioxidants. #BaiBaiBai
Commercial #5: Mr. Clean: Every mom's dream is to have their husband help clean, right? As the "Official Cleaner of Super Bowl LI," Mr. Clean gets down and dirty cleaning the house and ends up being the woman's husband.
Commercial #6: It's a 10 Hair Care: Another Super Bowl first timer, It's a 10 took an aim at President Trump's hair and its opening line begins with "America - we're in for at least 4 years of awful hair."
Commercial #7: T-Mobile: Starring Justin Bieber, Terrell Owens, & Rob Gronkowski. Through a dance off, T-Mobile let's customers know of the unlimited data plans they now have to offer. It also asked viewers to get involved by posting their own dance moves on social media. #UnlimitedMoves
Commercial #8: Buick: Starring Cam Newton & Miranda Kerr. This commercial uses humor at a pee-wee football game to display their attractive new Buick line of cars.
Commercial #9: King's Hawaiian: Advertising dinner rolls and it's new product, BBQ sauce, King's Hawaiian appears for the first time as a Super Bowl advertiser through this family-friendly ad.
Commercial #10: 84 Lumber: Another Super Bowl first timer, 84 Lumber makes its debut with this powerful ad. The original too controversial for TV, it shows a mother and daughter's journey through Mexico to the United States. The end of the commercial has viewers "see the conclusion" at the company's website. After the ad aired, the website received so much traffic that it was too much for the site to handle.
